We just saw Andrea Marcovicci two weeks ago at San Francisco's Plush Room. We were in the first row. She performed her tribute to Fred Astaire. Not since Marlene Dietrich has a woman ever looked so ravishing and divine in black tie and tails (or was it white tie with Dietrich?).
The show was incredible. Marcovicci's voice, interpretation, wit, energy, sensuality and deep connection with her audience make for the best, most intimate cabaret experience possible.
After the show she signed CD's and spoke with fans. She kissed my spouse, Ruth, and I on the lips and thanked us for being two women holding hands in public "from the very beginning". She had spoken out in favor of lesbian and gay marriage equality rights during her show and had sung more than one romantic song while looking at the two of us and smiling.
After Bette Midler's recent refusal (in The Advocate magazine interview)to support lesbian and gay marriage equality, itis important to know who our friends our and to support their shows and careers.
So here's to Andrea Marcovicci!
