Posted: 4/21/05 at 10:55amI have always enjoyed Andrea in the things I've seen her in. I liked her as Belle, but she was out the night I saw State Fair. I even saw her on the road in Jerry's Girls when I was in college. I had my picture taken with her a few years back at the BC/EFA Flea Market, and she was absolutely sweet and down to earth.

I have known Andrea for several years and she has never been anything but courteous to me. I was 13 or 14 when I saw her in "Beauty and the Beast" and met her at the stagedoor and since then, she has been an absolute gem to me (and my group of friends) whenever I see her in things. She allows us to chat with her in her dressing room, she has dedicated songs to us at her concerts, etc. She is nothing but sweet to all of her fans. She was pulled over awhile back but it was because her license was expired. She was not pulled over for smoking pot while picking Alexis up from school. That's ludicrous.
As for her career, she will probably never get anything as high-profile as "Annie" because that show was a phenomenon in its time. She was on Broadway in "Les Mis," "State Fair," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Starlight Express" and toured with "Cabaret," "Les Mis," and "Jerry's Girls," amongst others. She has her annual family Christmas show in Atlantic city with her brother and her daughter. She has her solo album. She isn't as high-profile as she was in the 1980s but there's certainly a lot to be said for raising her child and enjoying her family life. She's choosy with her projects and doesn't want to be forever typecast as the ingenue. She wants to stretch herself artistically.
I recently interviewed her and as soon as the article is printed, I'll post it here so you can see what is coming up next for her.

Andrea sufers from Jennifer Holliday syndrome (or the other way around): great voice, no acting ability. Great singers who can act (Audra, Patti, etc) are getting non-musical work.
PS: I know that it's hard to tell the two apart, but it was Savion Glover that was pulled over for pot.

I'm reminded of Jennifer Holliday performing in a small Chelsea theater--The Bessie Smith Story, about 5 years ago. She TORE THE DAMN ROOF DOWN, but her acting was full of the famous 'mouthy faces' she made in Dreamgirls. Not very nuanced, but she still was AMAZING to watch. Major stage presence, minor acting ability.
