Hey JenD...did you have the Annie movie sticker book?
Wow, I forgot all about that! Yep, I did. I remember the ET book too. We were so crazed about both movies that summer.
I remember "Annie" was supposed to premiere on HBO in January, but in December HBO would always sneak preview an upcoming movie as sort of a Christmas surprise. They showed "Annie" that December. We FREAKED!
That was before anyone had a VCR, and HBO was the only movie channel. We'd check the cable guide in case a movie we liked was on that day so we could schedule around it. I remember my block would just clear out whenever 'Star Wars' came on.
Hey...if you need your Annie fix...the movie is on ABC family right now! 8:00 Eastern...
I honestly never really liked this movie. I have seen the show on stage and thorughly enjoyed. I also enjoyed the 1999 TV movie version. However, this movie does not do it for me. I feel that Carol Burnett overacted her part, and Albert Finney wasn't that good as Warbucks. I also did not enjoy the added songs, particularly Sign, Dumb Dog, and Let's go to the Movies (which replaced the fabulos N.Y.C). I also though ending the movie on the 4th of July and having the servant and helicopter chase just weird. The whole thing just wasn't that good for me.
Wow ... I assumed when I read your post that tonight would be the 1999 version since it's ABC Family, so I was surprised to see them at the movies when I turned it on. :)
i remember going to see this movie in the theater for my birthday the year it was out (does that age me a little too much?). i also think that carol burnett is one of the funniest women of all time. for those reasons, i do love this movie. it's fun and silly and over the top.

I loved the movie when I was a kid. I watched it constantly. :) Amazing cast, and a truly great movie.
But after being in the show numerous times, if I hear even two notes of ANY song, I will scream.

Trivia tidbit: Carol Burnett filmed this movie, then had plastic surgery. THEN, she was called back to reshoot a scene. Oooooppppsss!

Good thing viewers couldn't see a difference!

I liked it fine....I was only 2 when it came out, but I watched it from 4 on. I have to say, Tim Curry scarred me for life, only to finally snap out of it 5 years ago. That bridge scene was terrifying to me. Come on now!!

Well, I saw a good chunk of this during my channel surfing tonight, and I tohught it was pretty awful. I liked Albert Finney, though he couldn't really sing that well, but that's about it.
That "At the Movies" song was atrocious. Carol Burnett was okay, though I find an alchoholic child-abuser to be... well, a not-so-funny concept. Tim Curry's American accent still bites. (Or rather started biting here, and continued to this day.)
As for the servants...
Okay, Punjab and Asp were cultural stereotypes of the broadest sort. But they weren't really offensive, and that's how they were in the comics, and the performers were charming, particularly Punjab, who had some nice little dance moments. BUT WHY THE F DID THEY INCLUDE PUNJAB'S MAGIC TELEKENETIC POWERS? I mean talk about distracting and pointless. And I understand the end involves a drawbrige, the autogyro, and Ms. Hannigan on an elephant or something?
Eugh...
