According to Broadway.com, Deborah Cox is in talks of taking over for Michelle T. Williams on January 25th. How do you think she will do? Why was Michelle's run so short?
R&B Star Deborah Cox Eyes Lead in B'way's Aida
What will her eyes lead? Will they lead the other Nubians to freedom?
I also heard that one of the girls (Tryence) from season 2 of American Idol was to play Aida
But Deborah Cox is better
Deboroh Cox can't act though. I saw her in "Love On Layaway" and let me tell you...I'd rather watch paint dry. She does come alive when singing so hopefully if they can work with her on the dialogue she will be very good. I just hope that all the other R&B singers who auditioned will eventually get to play the role...Faith Evans, Nicci (From Brownstone) and Trenyce. Trenyce talks about AIDA in this article.
Trenyce on Aida
Since when has acting skill been a priority for the powers that be over at Aida? Deborah Cox, Trenyece, for Crissake, someone make them stop the madness!
But, Deborah can saannng. She is definitly up there with Heather vocally. Trenyce. She's iffy but she's got the most "star quality"
Please. Close. This. Show.

Trenyce as Aida.
Justin Guarini is Radames.
Kelly Clarkson's Amneris.
Clay Aiken as Zoser.
Kimberly Locke as Nehebka.
Ruben Studdard equals Mereb.
Randy "Dawg" Jackson as Amonasro.
Simon Cowell, the Pharoah.
Now that's a cast I'd pay to see.

Please tell me you're not saying that Justin Guarini is a "good" singer! He sounds muffled, like he's singing with a sock in his mouth - and no charisma! He has to struggle just to make his mid-range notes. I get exhausted just watching him.
Now Clay Aiken is a real performer! He makes you sit up and take notice - what a magnificent voice!!! And he makes it sound (and look) absolutely effortless!

I love Clay, and would actually sit through Aida, or even Cats if he was in it, but my post was truly in jest.
Think I'll pop in my "Measure of a Man" CD now, that thing's addictive as crack.

Another R&B Singer? "Rhythm and Blues"...........something that most broadway performers don't understand ----R-H-Y-T-H-M and/or B-L-U-E-S. If Deborah Cox has the balls to go for it, great!!! Do you realize how many stiff performers with Betty Buckley/Craig Carnelia type mentors litter broadway? Deborah Cox -----I hope you make all these passive/aggressive critics eat the crappy comments they litter this website with. I hope you carve a new path for yourself. Even more, carve a new way for the singer/actors with heart who do more than just find their light. Good luck to you. Updated On: 12/11/03 at 01:35 AM
I LOVE DEBORAH COX and think she'd do much justice to the role of AIDA. I think her voice/vocal style is very similar to that of the original AIDA - Heather Headley.
Fun Fact:
Deborah Cox co-wrote and sang back up on the track 'Always Been Your Girl' from Heather Headley's debut cd.

Clay Aiken as Amneris- now that I'd love to see!!!!
Preach, BigBrother! That is so true. I get so tired of hearing wattered down R&B on broadway. I was listening to the Zanna Don't cd and got to hear some terrible Broadway Gospel and R&B...
People keep complaining about these R&B singers and grouping them all together. Granted, Toni and Michelle were not the best choices to put the R&B back in AIDA. Now Deborah, on the other hand, is all together diffrent. As are Faith Evans, Trenyce, and Nicci. Each shouldn't be defined as "another R&B singer." They shouldnt be penalized for having some success as recording artists.
has that Justin guy gotten a haircut yet? cause otherwise he looks like the Simpson's Bob
i personally am tired of the bs. why if theres a black lead in a play someone famous outside of the theatre world has to be hired for it to be a success. by now we should realize that this formula isn't working. lets get all of us other up and coming black actors who have trained their whole lives for the theatre a chance. I'm insulted by this idea that if it doesn't have a name on it, people won't see it. This is utter bull.

I don't think this is a "black" thing.
It's a money thing and producers want a name to sell. To white, black, red, green, purple and others.
Hence: Melanie, Antonio, George Hamilton, Mary Stuart, Toni, Joey Fatone, and anyone who's had five minutes of time on Access Hollywood.
Will it change...probably not. Not as long as $100 tickets are around.

If Clay Aiken played Amneris, I would actually camp out all night in a tent for RUSH tickets.

How sad is it that I can form a mental picture of Clay Aiken doing "My Strongest Suit" in full costume and all onstage at the Palace.

broadwayguy2, don't feel sad, I'm in the same boat. And what a glorious fashion show that will be.
