It would seem that everything that could be said about sunday's broadcast has been said..and said..and said. however there is one thing i don't has been discussed yet (and if it has please forgive the redundentcy). My personal favourite part of Tonys past has been during the First Nine Awards section. Not so much the actual awarding, but something they do that is very interesting to me as a theatre goer: going backstage. They would do a sort of mini-documentry with each show- off the top of my head i remember seeing "contact" and "wild party," and it was incredibly facinating to see the set designers, the lighting designers, and the composers all talk about what they do and what they did for the particular show. i remember michael john talking about how he first attempts to write a song by finding the "sound" that matches the mood, and he did a little thing on the piano. why do i remember that from five years ago? because it was insightful. i also remember going backstage at contact and seeing the choreography being learned... i can even remember way back when they first mounted the Chicago revival, and seeing the rehersals for that. With the FABULOUS shows that are on this year, it would have been fantaaaaastic to see inside the making of them. instead, i could only watch that portion of the awards via the internet, and even then it was incredibly rushed (git up here and git yer award, an' sit back dayoown!) and presented by a drunken teeny-bopper idol. not quite how i remember things! does anyone know why this portion was cut out? i imagine time constraints. but they've made time in the past. there was something a little disgusting about going through the tv guide and seeing things like "ultra mudd monster truck spectacular" on while the first nine awards couldn't even find a place in all of the 300 channels.
oy with the poodles already!
