Posted: 7/11/13 at 10:14amI'm going tonight! It will be my first time seeing him perform as I never saw him in Once. I would love to hear some reviews from anyone who has already been.

Did not get to see his show on Tuesday, but I arrived shortly after it was over to see Norbert Leo Butz in the 930 show. The girl next to me said that he performed a bitter breakup song and mentioned Megan Hilty specifically during it's setup. So seeing the blogger's comments about coming off as insecure seem consistent with what I heard from those at the venue.
Glad to see he's getting over that breakup A YEAR LATER.
Kazee stayed at the venue at length chatting up a really attractive brunette after the show, then stayed for Norbert's set. Although he spent most of the time looking down at his phone and paying zero attention to the performance, which seemed kind of dickish to me.

Found this review from the New York Times. Basically says the same thing, so its not very complimentary.

My friend saw it last night and said he comes across as extremely insecure like these articles suggested, but somehow also arrogant and frankly like an asshole. I suppose just because you're pretty and talented doesn't mean you win in the personality department as well.

Posted: 7/12/13 at 11:28amI went last night and enjoyed the show so much I bought a ticket to see it again tonight. I thought his voice sounded great and I liked his original songs. He does tend to overshare but I wasn't necessarily put off by it. I found his personality weirdly charming.

That TIMES review is great!
For Elizabeth Davis, ouch.

Posted: 7/12/13 at 8:43pmThought about getting tickets but after reading on here/the reviews, very glad I didn't. Can't believe he's STILL publicizing his bitterness over the breakup with Hilty. Move on dude (she certainly has)

By a random coincidence, I happened to see Megan Hilty out with her boyfriend at the theater tonight, and he does actually look like Steve Kazee, as Steve mentions in one of his songs. But if i were Steve, i would not be advertising that to the world - it is basically acknowledging that your appearance was not the problem, it was your personality. Not exactly something i would want to be admitting if i were him.

Posted: 7/12/13 at 11:32pmYou know, people break up. And it's grist for the stories we tell about our lives.

Posted: 7/12/13 at 11:37pmI think it's pretty tacky to name one's well-known ex to a crowd of people who probably either know her or know of her.

Kelly2, he does not name any names.
Tonight he said the NYT said he over shared. He didn't seem upset by it.
I did really like his songs, and the band was great.

Posted: 7/14/13 at 1:00amThere is no way someone so self-involved could read that review and not be upset about it.

Posted: 7/15/13 at 12:53amKazee always seemed (at least to me) like such a genuinely nice guy. I'm surprised that people seem so fed up with him.

Posted: 7/15/13 at 1:20amI didn't see the show and I'm just guessing here but it sounds more like a reaction to what people were getting from him. My guess is people go to shows like that to be entertained and get away from their problems, not listen to someone else's. Based on the comments here and the Times article it sounds like it was an evening of woe is me, which didn't go over well.

Sure FishermanBob, except the only person commenting here who saw the show liked it. So I think someoneelse'sstory is right that ppl posting here seem to have turned against him. Perhaps it was all that time not being in Once without explicit info plus lots of info about all sorts of other stuff in his twitter-verse.
But it's not as if Kazee's the first person to sing songs about love gone wrong. Or the first person to play the victim. Taylor Swift and Chris Brown are making careers out of it. And the review didn't seem to be an outright pan at all. Maybe it's just that people were expecting something different from Kazee.

As a groundless disclaimer, I will say that I am by no means a diehard Kazee fan. I saw Once just once off broadway at NYTW, and did not see his first 54 Below engagement. Frankly, I went recently because I find him to be a good singer and very easy on the eyes. I saw his 11pm show this last Friday night and I found him to be in incredible voice, with some very beautiful songs that I'd peg more as meaningful than downers - especially the one dedicated to his mom. He was so funny in speaking to the audience between songs, had amazing chemistry with his band and quite a bit of fun repartee. Some audience members verbally reacted to some of the things he was saying and he engaged them right back. I especially liked him stepping aside and letting the guitarist sing one of her own songs, and I also liked how much credit he bestowed on his band for helping him with framing the music and show as a whole. He and the band mingled with the audience after and for anyone interested, they were very accessible.
The show ran 2hrs, which I did not anticipate as other 54B shows I've seen have been shorter but I was entertained throughout. I stayed away from this venue unintentionally since Patti opened the club, but just this month I've had the pleasure to see Sherie Rene Scott and Norbert Leo Butz, and highly recommend it.
Steve spoke quite a bit about wanting to distance himself from Once, but not negatively so - he did seem very appreciative of that role and experience. I think if you can be lured to attend a cabaret show based on liking that performer in a show or a couple of shows, and you get to see them perform as themselves and learn more about who they are as an artist and still be entertained, it's a worthwhile night and makes you appreciate their talent that much more.
