After the reviews, has there been any word on whether their box office has gotten any kind of bump?

I believe we'll have to wait a weak for the new grosses

If there is a major jump (which I hope there is), we should hear about it Monday, or Tuesday at the latest...

"I believe we'll have to wait a weak for the new grosses"

This week's gross for GG will likely be significantly less, since they had a lot of comps to distribute this week.

I was wondering more along the lines of advance sales. Sometimes when shows have a good opening, they send out a press release stating the box office did twice its normal business or something like that.

I would love to hear the reaction on this Board if Christine Ebersole announced she was leaving Grey Gardens for a role in a soap opera.

I don't have numbers, but there has been a jump in sales.

You'll have to wait until a week from Monday to see if there was a bump. The figures that come out this Monday will probably show a dip in the box office, reflecting the hundreds of comps that the production had to give out to critics for the last previews and to friends of the production for opening night (shows almost always drop 10% or more during opening week).

Yes, but as I pointed out in another thread, when Ebersole was on The View they gave the audience t-shirts when they normally give tickets. Isn't that because there was not really a need to paper the houses the last week of previews or did they already give all the free tickets away?

PEACE.

What is going to happen when Christine and Mary Louise Wilson leave GG? I just can't imagine anyone else doing it.

...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

There weren't tickets to give away.

ETA: no tickets to give away for The View.

Even the biggest of hits -- including ones that were TOTALLY sold out and never papered -- have dipped during opening week.

I don't forsee either of them leaving for a very long time. It's only November now, and come June they'll both win Tonys, and from that point on they'll stay even longer. They know they are the heart and soul of the show.

I think the show will close when they decide to leave. They won't replace either one of them, especially Ebersole. Remember, the whole reason the show transferred in the first place was because of Ebersole.

That's a good point, Adam. I agree with you. I'm sure others will argue that it's the show itself which is great and not just the actress in it, but so much of the positive buzz around this show has surrounded the performance of one actress, which is dangerous. I'm reminded of Hugh Jackman in "Boy From Oz"...

I think it's more about how do you possibly fill those shoes. It's the kind of iconic performance that I dare compare to Streisand in Funny Girl and Channing in Hello Dolly! Actors will be compared to Ebersole and Wilson for possibly as long. It will be very interesting to see if replacements happen in those parts on Broadway and how the show will do on the road and regionally. However, I imagine there are a gazillion actors who want to play those parts. We'll just have to wait and see.

they haven't come out with any new discount codes, (I have been looking for Nov. 22nd), so that is maybe an indication that it is doing well.

Few shows have discounts for Thanksgiving week or Christmas week when tourists are in town in droves. Look for discounts to reappear in early to mid December or for January through March.

The only actress I can even think of that could play Little Edie/Edith anywhere near as good as Ebersole is Jennifer Laura Thompson.

But I agree with the others, Grey Gardens will close when Mary Louise and Christine decide to leave. They are the show.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

I saw it last night and was blown away by Ebersole! Mary Louise Wilson was great too, but to respond to your quesiton, the place was packed, even the balcony above the mezzanine, and the audience went wild during Ebersoles curtain call. And all of us got a button (like a policical button) with a line from the musical which was clever.

I'm curious to see when GREY GARDENS will do the obligatory double-page ad in the Times featuring a cornucopia of glowing pull-quotes.

It's close to 150K (or maybe more nowadays) per page in the Times...I'm not sure if this show is willing to spend that kind of money.
