So I went way over my normal TDF-ish theater budget and got an orchestra seat and really enjoyed it! Yes, the book is weak and dated and weird and it's early, flawed Sondheim...but Donna Murphy, Sutton Foster and Raul Esparza sang the hell out of it, the dancing was great, and honestly, by the end of it, I was on my feet clapping for them and thinking, wow, this could almost transfer...okay, I guess not with that book, but still...some of those numbers were so gorgeous to listen to that I was almost convinced!
For those who stage door, Sutton and Raul were charming, signing and taking photos for every one in sight and I finally gave up on Donna Murphy because I had to make my way back home, but she may have eventually come out. Lots of theater folks in the audience, Sutton said she'd heard Sondheim was there SOMEWHERE in that huge audience. And orchestra was very full from where I sat.
