I'm not too interested in seeing this show at all except the fact that Raul Esparza is in it.

I just see it as TABOO, a.k.a. Another Weird, Off-Beat Show About Depressed Gay People Wearing Weird Make Up And Clothes That Everybody Has Seen Before and It's Even Weirder Because Rosie O'Donnell Is Producing It and It Was Written by Boy George, For God's Sakes! - And It's Just A Little Obvious This Show REALLY Wants To Be Another ROCKY HORROR SHOW: The Musical.

There's a light in the darkness of everybody's life.

Like I said before, why don't we wait until at least previews start before condemning it. It is not totally without merit. It received 4 Olivier nominations in London, and this version is meant to be better.

PS: The score is by Boy George, not the book. Updated On: 9/16/03 at 02:59 AM

I don't remember any depressed gay people in Rocky Horror. Or the London version of Taboo, for that matter...

That aside, the show is nothing like Rocky Horror, which was a campy sci-fi send up. Remember that most of the characters in Taboo are/were real people. And who better to write about the "glam rock" period of music than Boy George?

I think lil Seany was engaging in some serious heavy duty projection, don't you?

I for one am pleased to see a musical with an edgy story, music, etc. Why can't musicals take on new territory? New music styles? The artform deserves the chance to evolve.

speaking of glam rock, wouldn't Velvet Goldmine be an awesome stage show??

Well, it was a failure as a movie, but maybe it would make a good stage show. I always feel I am entitled to 25 cent rebate on my movie admission price if I see a boom microphone swing into frame. I saw so many in Velvet Goldmine that I was owed three bucks before the movie was over.

Far From Heaven, on the other hand, is just ripe to be made into an opera.

mics in the frame? really? never saw any of those, i was so trasnfixed into this acid-trippish film. i saw the mic and camera in the reflection of the film the Bodyguard, lol.

I didn't care for Far From Heaven that much... re: re: re: re: re: re: re: Anyone NOT looking forward to Taboo?

I thought TABOO was a musical about the creation of the perfume. Am I mistaken?

Do thay still make CANOE?

Does anyone remember JADE EAST? It came in a big plastic (green or red) seated Buddah. The head was the lid, naturally.
Very mid '60s.

Getting back to the topic, I'm still looking forward to seeing Taboo, but I seem to be in a minority according to the NY Post's "Taboo-hoo" (see it on broadway world's home page).
I agree producer Rosie O'donnell made a lot of mistakes, and I also think this show may be a little too weird for many people, but weird or not, Boy George made a lot of good music. Updated On: 9/17/03 at 10:07 AM

I think the show will turn out to be less weird than people are expecting.

Rosie reportedly wants to make the show "more gay" : think the Anti-RENT. If so, good for her.

And speaking of "more gay", does anyone think there was a sublininal gay message in the Hai Karate TV commercials?

I am willing to give Taboo a shot! I was under the impression that Boy George himself was going to be in this musical, but I guess that is not going to happen.

I feel that at least it's something new & fresh and creative instead of another revival.

Yes, Boy George is in it, he plays performance artist/designer, Leigh Bowery. Euan Morton, the actor who performed at BOB, plays Boy George.

Why doesn't Boy George play himself?

Because George O'Dowd would be tripping over that long tooth if he tried to play his early 80's self.

Er, 'cos he's 42! The role covers BGs years from 18-27. And Euan Morton does a fantastic job in the role.

Jade East used to have a nice aroma. I wonder if it's still available?
