People laugh at me, but some of my favorite Bway songs come from "The Life". Specifically "My Body", "The Oldest Profession", "Someday Is For Suckers", and "My Way or the Highway".
So, there is love for Cy over here!

Posted: 8/9/07 at 4:27pmLittle Me is one of my favorite shows and has to be without a doubt the funniest musical ever written. The score is just brilliant. What with Carolyn Leigh's fantastic lyrics and Cy Coleman's incredible music, it's just a wonderful score. "On The Other Side of the Tracks (fast version)", "Be a Performer", "Boom-Boom", "I've Got Your Number", "Goodbye!", and "Real Live Girl" are all amazing songs. "On The Other Side of the Tracks" should be a standard and I don't know why it isn't. It's a great song for belters. Love this show, love Cy Coleman.

With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

While I have never really cared for some of Mr. Colemans work , especially Sweet Charity, I adore "On the Twentieth Century". I've been listening to it all week and though I thought Madeline Kahn was amazing in most parts, Judy Kaye was simply amazing as Lily Garland. Her voice was so much more suited to this difficult part.

Love Cy (and what a neat name)...when I get to the end of the Barnum reissue disc to his demos on a particularly long commute, I start smiling and singing along every time. He just sounds like the fun uncle you wish you had.
I'm never seen Barnum live but love the Michael Crawford video version. And, as I've stated before, I adored the recent Sweet Charity revival (although the tour, not so much). Such great songs! I can't think of any other Broadway composer who wrote so well for the brass section.

I am in total agreement with Wickedfan about LITTLE ME--it IS the funniest musical ever written, with a truly wonderful score and I am so glad I saw the original production back in 1962, with the remarkable Sid Ceasar. There was a newspaper strike on at the time, so reviews of this show were hard to come by, even though they were mostly raves. Thus, the run was not as long as it should have been.
Good news for those people interested in buying this CD album, which has been out of print for so long: It is now available from ArkivSong.com for $16.95. Grab It!! You will love it, from the brassy overture to the wistful final song, "Here's to Us". I just purchased it when I was looking for another CD. It is a featured recording on ArkivSong.com right now. So, check it out, Cy Coleman fans. You won't be disappointed.
P.S. Lucille Ball in WILDCAT, long out of print, is also available from ArkivSong.com--another winning score from Cy Coleman's pen. Grab this one, too!
