...because he wasn't in support of the then George H. W. Bush administration?

1) Sondheim got his Kennedy Center Honor in 1993 when Clinton was President.
2) I remember seeing him there for his tribute that year -- Angela Lansbury, Jason Alexander, Scott Bakula and Bernadette Peters were on hand to honor him.
Sondheim had the time of his life that night! It was the Clinton's and the Gore's. One big happy family at the time. And he truly enjoyed the time he spent with them.
He still considers that honor to be one of the most important events of his life!

I remember seeing the event on CBS. A real treat.
However, I recall that he declined the chance to be honored earlier. His reason being that he would did not support the then Bush administration.

In 1992, Sondheim declined the National Medal of the Arts, which is presented by the president. He later accepted it from Clinton in 1996. The Kennedy Center honors are given by the center, not by the president.
Go Sondheim!
