What can you tell me about it? How did you think it was? I reccently got a copy of the recording and while it is not the greatest thing I have ever heard - it is far from the worst

My friend is good friends with the composer. He sat next to him on opening night, and watched everything from the first curtain to the crunch with the critics.

I saw it a couple of times. I really liked the music, and they did some pretty cool things with the set. There was a scene set in a prison cafeteria, and they made the whole back wall of the set look as if you were looking down on it, so there were tables and figures of guys mounted there. Some really nice forced perspective stuff with the fire escapes and buildings. But, they also did the whole goofy looking miniature thing, with a tiny Greyhound bus that rode across the stage. (Like the ship and the submersible in TITANIC) Also, some strong performances going for it.

In my opinion, they suffered from the subject matter. It was based on a true story and one that was still fairly familiar to audiences in New York. If it wasn't, the press made them familiar with it all over again. I just think audiences had a hard time being convinced to see a story of a teen who murdered a couple of kids and found redemption. It also had some coherency problems, but nothing I can remember very specifically, and they switched directors a couple times midstream, never a good sign. I don't think it would be any different today, without some serious reworking.

But, like I said, the score was terrific. I think Paul Simon should write another musical one of these days.
