asking if it will be AS big is like asking if GONE WITH THE WIND was as big anywhere else other than here in ATLANTA.
(although the japanese apparently love it almost as much!)

billy elliot prob wont be a massive hit in new york like here in the west end because of all the changes what end up been made to suit american audiences(still dont get how you cant understand the accents when brits have no probs with yours)
I work in the West End as an actor(footloose at the moment love it)and they have been a lot of people saying about its transfer and how it will prob get lost in translation(poor taboo what the hell)
To many great british musicals die in new york because of how british they are yet so many american shows are hits over here even though they are VERY AMERICAN
very strange....

I think that Billy Elliot is going to be a BIG SUCCESS, one main reason; truth. This story is about truth and being yourself. Overcoming obstacles to stand out from the crowd and be who you want to be. Most Americans love the happy ending-type stories, where the person you care about the most wins. This is pretty much what it's like for the show. I have the soundtrack and for once I have not heard a show in a while that where almost every lyric and song fits the show perfectly. I would not change a thing about it. And it is also very rare that a director of the film stages the show too and wins tons of accloates for it. Good for him, the message is getting across.
Also, I had tons of friends who went and saw it last winter and said it was the best show they have ever seen and they have been working in the Theatre for 30+ years. So, hopefully if it is sending people form the U.S. to see it in London, then I would assume once it arrives here, it will be the biggest show on Broadway.
