I am desperately looking for any articles/research on the current issue of cell phones in theatres. I am against the usage of cell phones in theatres, but my assignment is to write an editorial opposing my own view! If anyone could post or lead me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Not an article but:

Some have occupations which requires they always have their cell phone or beeper turned on.

Other reasons: baby due that week in the family, forget to turn it off, waiting on important news, don't know how to work the phones, thought it was on vibrate, etc.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

So a quite a few years ago.... during a performance of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST... someone in the first row answers a cell phone.... and he yells into the phone..."can you speak up....I am at a Broadway show and can't hear you"

I believe cells should be blocked.... they have the technology... if they are doctors or people that need to be contacted in case of emergency they can leave their phones with the ushers and give their seat numbers.....they used to do that in the old days with beepers!

the only problem with showfan2's idea is that cell phones are so costly that an usher could easily take the most expensive one he recieves and then leave a minute early.

I don't know if there is an article that describes it, but Patti LuPone was giving a concert when a man's phone went off. Ms. LuPone stopped the show, looked at the man and said something to the effect of "Go ahead. We'll wait."

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I grew up near a big teaching hospital and as a result, ended up babysitting for lots of doctors. In those days when they went out they always left the number of the theatre and their particular seat number with me. Theatres are going to have to reopen a telephone line for emergency use or their argument against cell phones will always fall on deaf ears.
