I have read through many forums getting the deal on the dress code at the Broadway productions, and see that it wildy varies. Im planning a big day/date and am taking my girlfriend to see "Chicago" and a fancy dinner (was looking at "One if by Land, Two if by Sea", any good? anything better?). I dont own a suit or tux, so was thinking that I could wear my Dress Blues (USMC)? Too much? I dont want to underdress, nor look like a fool. Thanks for the help, never been to New York before so looking forward to it!
Anyone who will dress up and go to the theater and treat it like the EVENT that it should be treated like is a resepctable person in my book.
If you want to make it special (especially if you're also going to a nice dinner) than dress up. It will make the night even better.
Plus...people who go NOT dressed up, or wearing SHORTS...come on now...have alittle respect.
So dress up, you won't look like a fool. You'll just make everyone else who didnt bother to look nice themselves look bad
One If By Land requires jackets, I believe
As far as dressing up; when the ushers stop treating us like cattle and the un-renovate the theatres to bring back legroom, I will dress up. Jeans are fine for me now, though.

To be honest, what you should wear will probably be dictated more by the restaurant you're going to than the fact you're going to the theater afterwards. There is a wide range of dress at most Broadway shows, and pretty much all of them "fit in" and don't look weird to other people. While many people do, I would say that most men, especially in the summer, do not wear a sports coat or jacket to the theater nowadays. But your restaurant may have a clientele that typically wears a jacket, depending on where you go -- I would definitely ask.
And just a friendly suggestion: if you change your subject heading to something that makes it clearer what the subject is (like "what should I wear to the theater?"), you'll probably get a bigger response.
What you fail to see, Lizzie, is that those are all on different topics. One addresses the possibility of a strict dress code for Broadway, one asks if you should dress up all fancy, one asks simply for a suggestion as to what to wear, and one asks what might be appropriate (maybe they thought they could go naked!). A pretty divers group of threads if you ask me.
And, of course, no one can bother to skim all of them to figure out some kind of nice summary in their head. They have to start a new thread where people flail.
I personlly laugh at the people who are in a tux at a broadway show. Most of them I figured out are tourists who come into thetheatre with the wrong mindset that broadway shows mean that you MUST dress up very fancy.
I go to theatre too often for it to be an "event".
^ exactly. If I wore something nice, my dry cleaning bill would be through the roof!
my boyfriend is USMC too! we went to NYC a few months ago and he wore his dress blues and looked very nice, if i do say so myself. =] I def. think that would be appropriate for both your dinner and for the theatre. (Although, if you do want to dress down a smidge for the theatre...its totally up to you. You will see everything from jeans, to khakis and a polo, all the way to a tux.)
HAVE FUN!!
For a guy, pants, shirt, and jacket. He can then take the jacket off for the theatre, for a bit more of a casual air. Girls, nice top, and nice skirt/pants. No trainers for either. I don't often wear my jeans to the theatre if I can help it. Personal preference; I know it doesn't matter, but I feel happier in myself if I'm making a little effort. :3
Bump for Blue-Eyed Wonder.
