is it a must to for girls to wear dresses to auditions for singing calls? every audition i have gone to so far all the girls are all dressed the same in these little flower dresses but thats not my style. I enjoy being comfortable and wearing jeans and a nice top...do the people behind the table make note of what you wear..meaning would they ever think "this girl doesnt seem to care how she looks lets go with the girl whos dressed for the nutcracker"? I know some people go dressed for a certain role but I just need some advice from people who are more professional than myself who is just starting out. Sorry if this sounded strange...but it's just an observation I have...

above all, you need to feel comfortable. you can't focus 100% on your audition if your clothing is noy comfortable. You should look presentable (not like you rolled out of bed). Someone once told me to make sure you look like the same person in your headshot. LOL. but you also should dress appropriate to the style of the show, IF you know what it is. for example, audition for Rent, you would want to look downtown/trendy, not like you just left church. but you would want to wear something 'classier' when auditioning for Phantom. That way, when/if they type people out, you like you could belong in the show. if you go to audition for Rent and look like a church girl, they will cut you FAST. I saw that happen once.

whenever i go on auditions i dress like i would everyday. if you dress in pajamas or something everyday you should make a change for the audition, though i doubt you do. most of the time when people dress up they wont cast you as fast as if you were dressed normal. i suppose they feel you are being to pushy. a lot of auditions tell you to dress casual but it really depends what its for i guess. anyway if you feel the need to dress up uh dress up...i guess.

One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art-Oscar Wilde

#4what to wear??

The reason I have heard why women should wear skirts or dresses is because most costumes for women are skirts or dresses.

I agree--wear what is comfortable and what makes you feel like the best you.

Don't ever wear costumes--but leaning towards a show gently is good--as broadwayguy stated.

Don't wear something distracting. The audition should be about you--not your clothes.

You can also just wear all black--especially for a general call. This allows them to focus on you--and you are an open pallette as well.

But, unless it is for Rent or Hair--I probably wouldn't wear jeans. "Church wear" is a basic look for auditions. But, you don't have to go all flowery--in fact, I wouldn't go with a print--can be a distraction.

In the end--don't stress out about that part. There are no set rules--only things you can do to make things better for you and for their assessing you. If Patti LuPone or Heather Headley had walked into their auditions looking like crap, but sang the way they do--they prob got more notice for their talent than their clothes. (I hope!)

=)

Ok, i once sat in on an open call for auditions for the wizard of oz. about 3/4 of the girls auditioning for dorothy showed up in blue-gingham and pigtails! i swear, i was waiting for someone to mow them down with a shotgun by the time it was over!

I always wear black pants and a flattering top. I HATE skirts! I don't know what exactly you're aduditioning for, but if you ever go for something more like opera chorus or more legit stuff like that, THEN you pretty much have to wear a skirt or dress. But musical theater is way more laid back than that!
