Audra's How Glory Goes question...#0

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had any information on the backstory of the song "I Don't Mind" on Audra McDonald's 'How Glory Goes' CD. Thanks

I'm thinking that it was written for her, but I can't remember everything right now. Surely someone will know.

Actually it wasnt written for her. It's written by Jeff Blumenkrantz with lyrics by Annie Kessler and Libby Saines for the show The Other Franklin.

The Story behind the song:
"Lizzie is wife to William Franklin, who is Benjamin Franklin’s son. After years of desperately wanting a child, becoming pregnant and ultimately miscarrying, she learns that she will never bear a child. She sings the song to her godson (her best friends’ newborn) in the nursery, while everyone else is in the next room celebrating the christening."

Hope that helps!

Lord, have mercy. I am such a goober. I was thinking of the wrong song and THE WRONG ALBUM. What's that song on "Happy Songs" about "pee in my pool" and such? Wasn't that written for Audra? I need to go home and go to bed. My brain is pitiful.

You're thinking of "Beat My Dog" by Jay Leonhart. It wasn't written for her though since it has a copyright date of 1983. Leonhart says he got the idea when he noticed a yellow trail behind one of his kids in a swimming pool and said to them "You break the rules, you pee in pools."

Now, Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel often write songs for her. Like LaChiusa, wrote "When Lola Sings" for her American Songbook concerts at the Lincoln Center. It's a great song with little alusions to her, her husband, and daughter in it. On "Happy Songs" ,she sang "See What I Wanna See" written by LaChiusa for his show "R Shomon", which she was in last summer at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Perhaps that's what you're thinking about b/c that's the only relatively recent song on the album.
