Avenue Q OBCR: Does the novelty wear off?

But the weird thing is that I never 'overplayed' it.
I would just throw it on every once in awhile or wehn a song came up on iTunes.
It is normal for a CD you play nonstop to grow tiresome after awhile.
But I only listened to Q every once in a while, and still grew tired with it.
Which is what I felt was odd.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Posted: 12/21/04 at 7:09pmIt's hard for me to imagine listening to an OBCR with much interest without having seen the show..I generally purchase the OBCR once I've seen the show to remember the subtleties of the performances and the feeling I had while watching it. In the case of AQ, I found if anything the music GREW on me after seeing the show and with repeated listenings. The songs are deceptively simple and straight-forward, something similar to early Beatles songs I've always thought (so simple, but try writing one!) It became a mini-obsession for awhile, with that insanely talented cast. I find I listen to it less now only because I have become minorly obsessed with listening to "Urinetown". I still think it's miles above a OBCR such as "The Boy from Oz" which really got tiresome after a few listenings.

Posted: 12/21/04 at 11:08pmI liked it the first few times because of the cute and clever lyrics, but there's not a lot beyond the jokes (a few exceptions, as mentioned- Pupose, Fine, Fine Line, I Wish I Could Go Back To College) so I can't really get into it. I do listen to it when I need cheering up because it's a positive CD, but I don't think it deserved the Tony.

Posted: 12/21/04 at 11:20pmThe reason is because AVE Q is not good music. It's all about the lyrics. It's like listening to a stand up comedy cd time after time. As far as good music, there nothing there so it makes sense that the cd isnt popular the next time around. It's the same story with THE PRODUCERS. The music is just random notes that are funny first but then annoying.

i totally agree. "purpose" "fine fine line" and "i wish i could go back to college" never really get boring to me....and neither does "fantasies come true", but that's just b/c the sleeptalking in the beginning makes me laugh SO hard.
but you're totally right. i found the same thing with wicked..i loved it in the beginning but now there are only like two songs i like.
