On Monday, November 29 at 7pm, the Tony Award-winning songwriting team Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx will be singing their hit songs from Avenue Q, along with some unknown "trunk songs" at Birdland (315 West 44th Street). This will be the first time the duo performs a full concert in public. They will also be joined on stage by some Extremely Special Guests! There is a $10 cover and $10 food/drink minimum.
Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx created and wrote all the songs for the hit Broadway musical Avenue Q, which recently won the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Musical. Before it moved to Broadway, Avenue Q enjoyed a sold-out run Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre, where it received the season's Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical. In 2000, Bobby and Jeff won the coveted Ed Kleban Award for Lyrics for Kermit, Prince of Denmark, a proposed Muppet Movie based very, very loosely on Hamlet. They wrote and orchestrated two shows for Theatreworks/USA (Reading Rainbow and Ferdinand The Bull), plus a handful of children’s songs for The Disney Channel. They are currently working on a musical comedy film for Universal Pictures, and a stage musical based on a particular religion, with Matt Stone and Trey Parker from South Park. The writing team is eagerly anticipating the September 2005 opening of a second company of Avenue Q in Steve Wynn’s new hotel, Wynn Las Vegas. Jeff and Bobby both write lyrics and they both write music, together, in the same room, at the same time. They met in 1998 in the BMI Workshop, which they recommend highly to any aspiring musical theater writers.

Is is just me, or is anyone else tired of L & M running around town doing concerts and panels flaunting their one hit? They're pretty talented guys, but honestly, they're hardly the second coming. I wish they'd go home and write another show already so we can see whether they're just a one hit wonder or not.
ANDY-control yourself.... Don't say something you'll regret haha

It's just you.
I don't think Lopez and Marx are doing anything different from other composers (especially young composers) who frequently put on concerts and Q&As to answer the questions of fans, as well as showcase some of their other work. Lopez and Marx will be performing non-Q stuff as well (ie. Kermit, Prince of Denmark). It's a good way to keep people interested in your craft, especially investors.

Dear Mr. Schwartz,
Please don't be bitter or angry with Jeff and Bobby just because you lost...again.
Better luck next time,
Andy

"It's a good way to keep people interested in your craft, especially investors."
Wizard: I think the way to keep people interested in your craft is to actually craft - create something. I'm sure L & M's investors are chomping at the bit to mount something else by them before their popularity fades.
What bothers me about their doing panels about "making it on B'way" is that they've had one successful show. And to speak as if they have all the answers is completely disingenuous. There is no formula. We learned that from "The Frogs." Even the most successful and talented verterans can screw up a show. These guys are talented and lucky so I'd hope as artists they would be more interested in building a body of work than just cashing in.
I thought "The Frogs" was a delight. No screw-ups for me!
And Jane, M&L have many projects underway right now. They are very busy creating new work and new musicals - Hopefully we'll hear some new songs Monday night.
They aren't gong away anytime soon. :)
Andy,
I just saw this. Jane honey, some of us adore the talented Marx and Lopez and can't get enough of them.
I can't wait for this concert. Oh, and they are working on a project about religion.
I look forward to that and all the other things they are working on.
PS: Jane, Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez are more then talented! NEVER FORGET THAT, OR IT WILL SUCK TO BE YOU.

Andy, Andy, Andy... must we get Wicked involved? I thought we could leave this clean...
but you've been ruining a lot of things lately haven't you? huh? huh?
I want to know who the special guests are.
Hope it is Stephanie D'Abruzzo, she rocks!
Hey Andy do you know who the guests are?
It can't be John, Barrett Foa as they are in the Pippin concert.
Hope Steph and Jen are special guests.
(And praying for Rick and some puppets)

I concur about the great concert, but it certainly does NOT suck to be me!!!
Andy. I'm surprised at you! I was just quoting from an Avenue Q Song. And it does not suck to be me really. I met Bobby Lopez for the first time, and he is very nice!
