I think that it is acceptable to use the phone in the lobby (which I was doing when I was yelled at) but if you use your phone at your seats, I can understand the yelling.

It really doesn't matter what you guys think is acceptable or not. It is a NYC LAW that you can not use a cell phone anywhere inside a Broadway theatre. Ever. For any reason. At intermission, go outside.

I agree with that, JRB. But It was a crisis and I was going to get up and go to the lobby when the usher started freaking out on me.I explained to her what was going on and that she SAW me get up to leave when she started yelling she could have skipped being rude and just let me go.

Well, I agree that how that usher handled things was overkill. But, what she was saying was correct.

Don't be too surprised about the ushers. They were nasty when I saw the show too. They kept bugging EVERYONE about their cell phones. One usher commented that they are just making sure that anything that could record the show isn't being used...but more importantly, to make sure that everyone in theater knows that they are on the lookout. Someone get in with a video camera and taped the entire show and its been avaible online ever since. I 've seen it and its not a great bootleg, but just the same..they don't want any more video taping.

And I have never seen a sign in a Broadway theatre saying that the use of cell phones is prohibited in a theatre. If they are so strict about the law, why don't they mention in the preshow announcement that the use of cell phones is strictly prohibited along with cameras and recording devices instead of simply saying to "turn them off."

There is a sign in the box office lobby and in your Playbill there is notification.
And, it's just common sense and theatre etiquette just like many things we know to do in a theatre but don't have signs posted for.

When I saw Ave. Q. before the show started one of the ushers came toward our section and started yelling at us to put our camera's away. We told her none of us had one out and she was like "Well I saw a flash! Put it away!"...she was the only one who saw it though. No one else saw a flash.
You aren't feeling overwhelmed are you?

Well shoot, someone please inform the Beauty and the Beast ushers (or, better yet, the 30 merchandise people who flood the aisles every chance they get). I swear, I've never seen people so happy to take pictures of a scrim before. It's like they've never seen a logo in their lives, and somehow capturing it will define their New York / theatergoing experience...
(sorry for a minor threadjack; I just thought tonight's B&B crowd was incredibly rude throughout the show.)

You have to take it out to make sure it's off. I think sometimes people just forget that. And there is technology that would make it so the theater had no cell service. it like blocks out the signal, so they also have a choice in the matter.

Traci - yes, she did. I didn't like, touch it to begin with, but she politely reminded me not to touch it or put anything on it. Not like I would dream of it, I think that's disrespectful.
I remember once at Rent, before the show started, there were like 5 pictures taken, and an usher screamed out.
"THERE ARE NO PICTURES IN THE THEATRE...." *pause* "EVER!"
Everyone started clapping and laughing. The "EVER!" was so perfectly timed.
