Hey Guys-
My high school drama department is not funded by the school AT ALL. We recieve NO money from the PTA or any other school organizations. We have been coming up with ways to use our resources wisely. They are many show we would LOVE to do but can't to do budget issues. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could obtain FREE samples of BEN NYE MAKEUP kits, or any other make-kits for that matter. Also, does anyone have any good ideas for getting promotional items through companies. We are working are but off to try and get the program to where it is used to be 15 years ago, but it doesn't seem to be working. PLEASE IF ANYONE has any ideas please PM me!!! Thank you so much!

my senior year I had the same problem
what we did was sell ads in the program, going to businesses that the group frequently goes to
ex: we had a coffee house that we always went to either before or after rehersals and asked them they donated like 300 bucks and all we had to do was put their business card in the program
I dont really understand what you mean by promotional items
if you mean stuff that you all can promote the show with a simple write up about the plot and the history of hte show is usually a good thing for a press release then talk about the cast. The internet is great when it comes to press releases, search for your area and see what news media covers it( we had like 12 radio stations, 4 TV stations, and 6 papers including the arts papers) get a contact e-mail from them and e-mail them personally asking if they would help with media coverage.
Many radios and TV sations do interviews with local talent and if you talk to the contact they will usually be able to put a few different people on the air.
We did LSH my senior year and was on a 5 min radio interview one morning while everyone was on their way to school and they re-aired it again durring rush hour, a local Tv station brought in our seymoure and Audrey with Audrey 2(stage 1) and talked about the show's history and they way we made the plant come to life and what experience we got out of theatre, both times they aired ticket information for the show
If your school has a printing class ask if they will help do all the poster stuff, the only thing you have to pay for is the paper more then likely( we printed 500 14x17 posters for under 75 bucks)
If you have anyother questions let me know
I was in charge of makeup in high school, and it was always my job to take care of ordering kits. A simple Ben Nye kit isn't too expensive (I forget the price offhand). Could you just have everyone front the money for their own kit? Also, when you order a lot of kits, most makeup shops will give you a school discount. Or if that's not an option, find someone who has a lot of stage makeup and have them act as makeup artist.
I also did PR senior year and did a lot of peddling for ad space. We offered four different sizes for ads, each priced progressively higher: $25 for a 1/4 page ad, up to $100 for a full page. And we got a good amount of contributors. Plus, printers will give you a school discount. Ours gave us 10% off in exchange for a free ad.
Hope that helps!
ok so my drama club at school is the same way (we dont get any funding from anything else) but weve still been pretty successful in raising money for performances (recently weve done "bye bye birdie" and "anything goes") but one of the main tricks of raising money is to have fundraiser shows that dont cost any money to put on, but you charge for people to enter, plus you can sell concessions at the door (but like bake sale style...like have everyone performing buy or make something and then bring it in to sell at concessions)...some examples of free fundraisers are like an improv night or a performance night (where people chose songs from plays or something to perform...some of the group numbers can be really good...aspecially if you have the music for it and could get like a mini pit)
also the ben nye sample kits i think are only like 15 bucks each...it helps if you have everyone buy their own make up kit for them to keep and spend money on two big kits (one for guys make up and one for girls) for people who dont buy their own
to kinda reply to the person about costs of the make up kits, we get ours for about $10 each..they were $15 for King and I cause we needed body paint too, but each kit lasts forever!
and whenever we need to fundraise, we all put on our shirts from the program and go out into the community, telling them about our program, showing pictures and programs from past shows, and ask that they donate whatever they can...we also put ads in the program, announcements, etc for those who do help out!
good luck!
