Fosse and Dance of the Vampires!

When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

I've never seen On Your Toes Margo. It's one of the few Rodgers/Hart shows I'm not too familiar with other than a couple songs..."The Heart is Quicker than the Eye", maybe.

Well, there was a mention of ballet, so I immediately thought "On Your Toes." George Balanchine -- generally considered the greatest choreographer of the 20th Century -- created dances for two dozen or so Broadway musicals before becoming the artistic director and choreographer of the New York City Ballet (where he created literally hundreds of ballets that have entered the standard repertoire of every major ballet company on the planet). Perhaps, his finest achievement during his years creating dances for Broadway was his work on "On Your Toes" -- most famously the legendary "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue Ballet" which is a landmark in the history of dance on Broadway (and has been performed frequently by major ballet companies throughout the last 70 years or so since Balanchine created it -- Richard Rodgers' suite for that ballet is one of the more famous neo-classical pieces of the 20th century ..... one of those pieces that if you don't recognize by name, trust me, you'd recognize it as soon as you heard it).

Multiple Bravas Miss Channing and good morning Marquise.

The choreography for Gene Kelly and Vera Ellen in "Words and Music" has nothing to do with the original "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" for "ON YOUR TOES." I'm sure Miss Channing can tell us who did the choreography for Gene and Vera.

In regard to ON YOUR TOES/Slaughter, Balanchine redid ballets to showcase a particular artists strengths. The choreography made for Vera Zorina for "Slaughter" in the film ON YOUR TOES is different from the "Slaughter" choreography Natalia Makarova danced when ON YOUR TOES was last presented on Broadway. Though I have only seen (lengthy) clips of Zorina, I am pretty sure that both she and Ms. Makarova did the famous Battements (kicks.)

ON YOUR TOES Act I ended with "La Princesse Zenobia" ballet in which the Vaganova schooled, Kirov Ballerina - Makarova danced sur la pointe. Makarova is in my opinion the best female dancer of all time.

Also I heard Pal Joey was great. The one with Gene Kelly, not the film with Frank Sinatra

Doesn't Gene Kelly choreograph all of his movies?

And I give props to the Wicked ensemble...they rock, even if the choreography isn't top notch.

According to IMDB, Balanchine did choreograph the film version of "On Your Toes" (1939) starring Vera Zorina.

Robert Alton was credited as choreographer for "Words and Music."

And I agree, though I'm no expert, Makarova was the greatest ballet dancer that I've ever seen.

I think all my input has been mentioned already but to be redundant...NGD, I was extremely impressed with Noah Racey. Also 42nd street and Chicago...well as long as Melanie Griffith isn't involved!

Contact.

I don't recall any backflips but I could be wrong. But even if isn't "flip free" I still think the choreography is brilliant. I was watching the PBS version and hit mute for a bit of the
third part. I knew the music, obviously and I love how clearly the choreography expressed the music.

Again- Jerrome Robbins Broadway and Fosse's Dancin'.
There were several changes in the Film version of the Slaughter Ballet. He dances with the girl's corpse (pretty violently too if my memory is correct) but that was "reworked" to allow for the sensibilities of the times.
Where is MIRIAM when we need her???
