BIG lost an incredible amount of money becuase the producers kept it running for months at a loss. It should have closed Labor Day, but they deluded themselves into believing it would do great business at holiday time. It didn't. For around four months, they were losing a hundred thousand dollars or more every week.
"All of the titles in Jon's post made it to the stage long after their respective movies came out, and in most cases completely reinvented the source material."
It's a valid point, but one I'd argue in the case of Promises, Promises. Yes, they changed the name from The Apartment, but it was still a recent, major Hollywood hit when the musical premiered (the time between screen and stage being less than for Big), and far from a reinvention.
