I think one of the few criticisms I would level at Billy Elliot is that the show lacks almost any kind of objectivity when it comes to the political and economic situation of the times. When I've seen the show in London the Margaret Thatcher section has also got a great response, even from the audience members who would have voted for her at the time. It is a small criticism though, since Billy Elliot packs a powerful emotional punch and the 1980s were a very emotionally charged decade in modern British history.
I'd agree with you - if this were history. But it's a play. It's a story of Billy and his dad and his life. Naturally you're going to see it from their viewpoint - not the government's. In fact, to inject the government side into this would dilute the impact of the events on Billy's life.
