A8 that's just absurd. makes me wonder if you are being deliberately obtuse. not that ben brantley is the ultimate authority but he is not known for praising dreck. he found the show to be brilliant. there is great stuff there. some of which has been listed here. if you didn't enjoy it, that's fine. but to say there is nothing there is just absurd.

On the contrary: Lysistrata Jones, Mr. Burns, this opus....
The Saenger Theatre recently opened after 8 years of darkness and a 53 million dollar renovation due to Hurricane Katrina. We're still working the kinks out and evidently music critic Theodore P. Mahne of The Times-Picayune needs to be one of them. Word here is that he's a theology teacher at Jesuit High school but other than that no one knows who he really is. Since Book Of Mormon is the first play of our first season back please bare with us during this dress rehearsal. An error such as Mr Mahne is an embarrassment as say a spotlight operator missing a major cue. We'll get it right. The show in New Orleans is sold out every night and receiving standing O's. I've worked 9 out of 16 shows and it will be sad when it leaves. The cast and crew are fantastic. Will Coviello's review from the Gambit was a MUCH better read...as he even ribs Mr Mahne for being too sensitive. I've included the link below. Enjoy!

They should frame this review outside the theatre.
This is about a week late, but as evidenced by the comments that followed the review (most I've ever seen for a nola.com article), please don't assume all of us Louisiana theatre goers share his opinion. I work at the Saenger Theatre, and the BOM run here in New Orleans has been almost sold out, aside from the lotto. Most people love the show, based on the roars of laughter and snippets of the songs being sung as people leave after. I think I've seen maybe a handful of people leave, but for NO, that seems to be typical with all shows. People just can't sit through the whole thing down here, whether it's a concert, play, or ballet.
The only interesting note about the BOM run in New Orleans is that the merchandise people told me that the "I'm Gonna Man Up All Over Myself" shirt has been the most popular sell, more than likely due to the fact it's in the same colors of the New Orleans Saints. :-p
This is really funny. When Auntie Mame was first adapted into a stage play, one of the writers (I forget which one) said something to the effect of, "She's immoral and unlikable. There is no way audiences would ever root for such a character." Of course, she went on to become a classic archetype. It turned out to be a good thing for Robert E. Lee and Jerome Lawrence.
