She was awful. Her voice broke on all of the high notes. I love Gypsy, so I would consider going back to see it again if I hear that she gets over whatever is ailing her.

I happen to think she has an amazing singing voice, and a wonderful stage presence. She acts beautifully on the stage, and clearly feels at home there (as opposed to movies and television where, in my opinion, she doesn't come off as well); though she is not bad on TV or film.
But I think what makes her so unique and wonderful is not her ability to sing or act, but her sincere goodness as a human being. She is a wonderfully kind woman, she goes out of her way for people, she fights for what she believes in (ex: Animal Kindness....Broadway Barks)...she is just extraordinary.

As far as Gypsy goes, I had said in a previous post that I have seen it 5 times already (and Bernadette was at every performance I went to). Did I think she was great in the role at first, no, but she was good; and I knew as the show progressed through previews she would "Become Rose." I was right! She is sensational as Mama Rose. She gives her a humanistic quality that was never really there with the previous women who played her; and I think she is able to do that because she is so kind.

I think this entire situation about people mocking her for being out for a few performances is ridiculous! Bernadette is not God! She is not immune to germs. Perhaps an average person can go to work with resperitory infection (even though their Doctor would most likely tell them to rest); NEWS FLASH: Bernadette Peters is currently singing and running around on a stage for 2 and a half hours 8 times a week for a living! I'm surprised she didn't collapse on stage when she did force herself to go on (against her Doctor's wishes I'm sure).

I understand that there are people who do not like her, and that's fine because there are people I don't like; but at least be able to justify why you don't like her. Petti reasons like her hair is too curly, her skin is too light, and her voice is too cutesy just don't cut it. Sorry!

This is all Michael Riedel nonsense. Gypsy is one of the toughest roles in theater and Bernadette got sick. BIG DEAL!
