British Phantom fan boards were discussing a year ago this restaging with probably 60% disliking it and 40% neutral or liking it. For me, I'll stay with the brilliant original.
There was quite a bit of speculation that it was done to decrease running costs as Hal Prince would not be the credited director, costumes were based on Maria's designs but not done by her, etc. Not having the chandelier drop means it will be able to play a number of houses it couldn't previously.
For me, I like the traditional feel with no video projections, etc. of the Broadway/West End productions. To me it just seems more in keeping with the time of the show.
