BWW Celebrates Women's History Month

BroadwayWorld is running a series of interviews with women directors during March, which is Women's History Month. First up: Kate Whoriskey, perhaps best known for 'Ruined' and currently represented off-Broadway with 'Her Requiem' at Lincoln Center Theater. She's also the director of 'Sweat' by Lynn Nottage ('Ruined' ), which is headed for NY next season after recent runs in Oregon and D.C.

Susan Stroman chats with BWW for this week's interview in the Women's History Month series. Asked why there are still so few women directing musicals on Broadway and if the community ever addresses the disparity, she says: "No, it's not something that's talked about ever.... I think it would be opening a can of worms, ultimately, if people talked about." She wants young women entering the profession to know "not to be afraid to ask questions, not to be afraid to try, not being afraid to fall on your face.... You cannot wait for the telephone to ring. You have to be the one to go out and stir it up." She also talks about the nonmusical she's currently directing off-Broadway, Dot, and her recent Broadway flops.
