The opening and closing scenes were the same - that museum set, all white. People were perusing the collection, and you saw Amneris in a glass case. She sang, and a man and woman caught each other's eyes while looking at what you'd later find out was the tomb in which Aida and Radames died. In the opening scene, they were split apart by the scene change. In the closing scene, they'd be drawn to each other, just as the curtain closed.
I saw the production in Austin and was not pleased. They cut "Not Me" and the "Elaborate Lives" at the end before they enter the tomb. My friends in the show said that the director thought that they were taking to long to die, so he just cut the song. I think the Long Island show had the same director and from a friend I have in that production, they made the same cuts.
The somewhat cool thing about the Austin production was the sandbox/stage thing. the theatre is a thrust, so the thrust was made into a sandbox and lots of action/dancing took place in the sand. I was skeptical at first, but I sat in the front row and didn't end up with any sand in my face, so I was ok with the choice.
They cut those?! How could they?!
yup they did cut that. It made me sad when they weren't singing, just being thrown into the "tomb." But i liked the sandbox stage thing too, such a cool way they did the set.

Well, at least Schele Williams didn't cut songs or the fashion show in the Ogunquit Maine production.
I really wish I could have seen the North Shore theater production in Beverly Massachusettes. Supposedly the choreography was spectacular. And Aida's robe in DotR was so striking and LARGE, that it covered the entire circular stage.
Like someone said upthread, each production may have something unique that makes the show memorable.
