In the end the point is, should the actor have jumped off the stage, gone to his family and said "Stop, this is disruptive!". No. That is supposed to be the job of the ushers. In the past ushers have jump all over me for just taking a picture with my friends while in our seats "Because there was no photography aloud in the theater.". But while someone is ruining a performance with their behavior, the ushers just sit by and watch? Of course, the actor could have sent a txt message to his family at intermission letting them know to tone it down. But the plain and simple fact is that the ushers should have taken care of the situation. It is their job after all.
"The actor is NOT responsible for their actions. Even IF he knew they were going to be there, he likely thought that they KNEW how to behave. He was likely mortified by their behavior. (And this thread only serves to magnify that.) "
Exactly--unless he was standing on stage gesturing and making comments to his group of friends, I don't get the reasoning that he is responsible simply for knowing them. Yes, he could tell his family how to behave--and maybe he did? At some point the responsibility is on them, not remotely on him. If his freinds and family's behaviour was such a mess at the Papermill as well, you would think someone would try to tell him to get them in control or not re-hire him for NY.
"Wow, so I guess by referring to them as "functioning dysfunctionals" that automatically gives them a pass on their trashy, inconsiderate behavior. Sounds like Tommy is relishing in that. Like I said earlier; tool. "
Where does it sound like he's relishing in it? What an insane way of thinking.
I think there are 50 #functioningdysfunctionals (and some friends) in the audience tonight.... Best Easter ever!!!
Eric, that's what I was referring to when I said "relishing". Not so warped in my opinion.
I was way more harsh than I intended--I still don't think this classifies the actor as a "tool", but I was a jerk to say what I did. Sorry.
No problem and thanks.

While we all may not agree on how blame for this incident should be assigned, I DO appreciate the passion with which the folks on this board have responded. We all love the theatre and the magic it conjures. If it were not for that love, we would not take the time from our day to read and respond here.
Thank you to those of you who were also at the performance and have added additional information about both the obnoxious actions of select audience members and negligent response of theatre management.
I have reached out to both the Nederlander Organization and Disney Theatrical. If I receive a response, I will certainly share the additional information contained in your posts.
