Went to the 2nd Preview of Gypsy tonight - Bought a balcony ticket for $27, and when I got inside, they directed us to the mezzanine. The usher said the Balcony will be closed until further notice, and we were allowed to pick our own seats in the mezzanine. Ended up sitting in amazing seats.. for $27. I'm assuming this had to do with the St. James falling apart up there last night.
The show was wonderful.. Anyone else obsessed with the new ending?

JsnWse,
I tried to PM you to avoid spoilers for everyone else, but i'd LOVE to know what exactly the "new ending" is that everyone is buzzing about? What did it used to be, and what is it now?
PS - GREAT to hear the show was wonderful, as well as your fortunate upgrade!
PPS - Too bad for the lady who the vent landed on...

Does that mean that Ms La Lupone did not go on? I heard that it's in her contact that if not EVERY single seat is sold or filled that she will not go on....she mentioned that it keeps people from seeing her performance.

Posted: 3/5/08 at 12:32amThat's awesome that you got great seats for $27. How packed was the show?
#4re: Balcony closed at GYPSY
Posted: 3/5/08 at 12:37amWasn't packed at all tonight. We were in the mezz and moved down to the front row of the orchestra.

The orchestra looked full, and the Mezzanine (including the lucky upgraded balcony ticket holders) was only half full.
LuPone went on, and boy did she go on!

NEW ENDING SPOILER
In every other production of Gypsy ever, Rose walks off with Louise. In this production, the curtain literally falls on Rose, hands outstretched towards that big ROSE sign.

Ahh, yes! OK.
You may want to put *spoiler* in your original thread title now.

The original ending works just fine.
The new one, Spoilers (crying)
Is a cop out.
Merman didn't want anyone onstage with her but it was written that Louise see's the end of the number and is left clapping after the audience.
That's chilling.

Posted: 3/5/08 at 1:06amCPD, that Louise moment still exists in this production. It's literally just the last 10 seconds that change.

Well if that's the case i have a feeling LuPone will never be on, cause i just don't see this being a sell out every night!

The balcony was not closed because of the falling vent. It was closed because there were not many seats sold, so they moved everyone into the mezzanine. The vents were all checked and reinforced, from what I have heard. An usher should not have told you it was "closed until further notice" since that is not the case.

"Closed until further notice" could also mean "Closed until we sell more seats." Same thing.
Many Broadway theatres with balconies close their balconies when that performance hasn't sold exceedingly well. There have been many times where I held balcony seats and were moved elsewhere.

UNGOOD, lol. :p
The stage is very high, so you really miss a little bit of the action.
BUT, to have Gimmick Tand Rose's Turn HAT close in front of us... so worth it.

I wasn't in the front row, but it looked great from the 8th row on Monday, and even from ORCH Row S last night.

Posted: 3/5/08 at 7:48pmGlory....its ridiculous that you even tried to get 1st row seats if you are this worried.....its ALWAYS safer to go a few rows back just in case the stage is high. That's the case with ANY THEATRE. So why did you buy 1st row tickets?
#21re: Balcony closed at GYPSY
Posted: 3/5/08 at 7:57pmbecause i don't mind if the stage his high, i've survived Legally Blonde at the Palace's huge stage, but I forgot that there were lights for Gypsy in the front of the stage. I knew it was going to be close but the way people are explaining it, it sounds like i'm not gonna see a single thing.
