Though I'm not sure about Barbeau playing Judy, the play itself sounds like it could be interesting.

Posted: 12/11/05 at 2:30pmAn odd choice perhaps, and she'll have to compete with the powerful performance in everyone's memory of Isabelle Keating. Keating's turn in OZ remains miraculous. She managed to create just enough of the (drag) Garland everyone expects, while imbueing her with womanly vulnerability.

I don't remember La Judy being so well-endowed.

Here's a link to the play's website, which is still under construction. There are a few photos of Barbeau as Garland. My problem is that the photos seem to evoke Judy's look from her television show period, not the final months of her life.

Posted: 12/12/05 at 1:37pmGarland died at the age of 47. Barbeau is 60. So not quite 20 years, but still.

And I am a huge Judy fan so I am not mocking or insulting the woman at all. But you have to admit that life had taken such a toll on her that she had aged far beyond her years by the end.

Posted: 12/12/05 at 2:33pmI just went to the website mentioned. I agree the pictures don't look very realistic. In the last year of her life, Judy was emaciated. Barbeau's arms look like they belong to someone who works out every day. Doesn't look or sound promising.

Posted: 12/12/05 at 2:54pmI disagree about the pictures. All things considered, she doesn't look bad. And this will be live, not photographed up close, which makes a big difference. Her characterization is what will make or break it. I'd certainly wait to see what she comes up with before making a judgement. Ms. Blanchett didn't look a thing like Ms. Hepburn in THE AVIATOR, but according to many people, she pulled it off admirably (I didn't see it, just going by what i heard.)
