Hi everyone. I have an audition Monday (I just found out last minute) for Bat Boy and I need a 16 bars of a contemporary Broadway song. I've been told I'm a soprano but I sing alto parts much, much better. I can do some mezzo stuff. Does anyone have any suggestions? At the moment I'm leaning towards the first verse of Streetsinger from Brooklyn or Ireland from Legally Blonde. I don't particularly think either are good audition pieces.
Also, as a heads up, RENT is a no-no. It's at Adelphi University and the directors just finished being in RENT.
Thanks so much, everyone!!

I was in Bat Boy last year! I sang "I Don't Want To Show Off" from Drowsey Chaperone. I'm a soprano, but I have a strong pop-belt mix so I went with that song and used my mix. I got the role of Mayor Maggie. It was a great show - lots of fun!!!
I would say maybe a song from Urinetown (Priveledge to Pee), Avenue Q (Fine, Fine Line) might be good choices.
Break a leg.
I auditioned for Bat Boy with "It's a Privilege to Pee" and got a callback. Urinetown is a good choice.

"The Wizard and I" starting from "unlimited, my future is unlimited..." You can even riff if you feel like it.
I also auditioned for Bat Boy and sang Purpose from Avenue Q, got a callback and was Roy/ Pan. I think something to keep in mind is many characters have big ranges vocally in the show, so sing something that shows off yours.
Using Wicked in any audition ever is a mistake.
I wouldn't say 'any audition ever' (for example, it might work if you're trying out for High School Musical or Legally Blonde), but I think you want to do an audition song that fits the spirit of what you're trying out for. Like, if you want to do, say, Hairspray, then don't sing "Javert's Suicide." If you want to do "Phantom of the Opera," then don't sing "Omigod You Guys."
"Purpose" does sound like a great choice. But I think the OP was female, and it doesn't look that professional to sing a song written for another gender. To show you have comedic chops, you might want to sing "Diva's Lament" from Spamalot. If you have a big enough voice to do the songs you listed, I think you'd shine at Diva's Lament! You might also want to consider something like "Worst Pies In London" from Sweeney Todd, because Sweeney Todd and Bat Boy both have that comic/tragic tone.
^haha. I didn't mean for her to sing it, I was just giving an example of the style of song.
Thank you all so much!!!!
