Beauty and the Beast transfer... why did it switch theaters?

If Disney owned the Minskoff wouldn't they change the name to just about anything that would be better than the Minskoff which is named after the real estate family that built 1515 Broadway?

The Cole Porter Theatre, the Frank Loesser Theatre, the Lorenz Hart Theatre, ad ad infinitum.

Even the Uris family let the theatre they named for themselves in the building they built, be changed to the Gershwin.

"I am pretty sure though that Disney leased/bought rights to, whatever its technically called, the Minskoff for six years."

That's not true. They lease the Minskoff the same way any other producer would. Ditto the Lunt-Fontanne. There is no "6 year contract."

"As for the New Am, Disney's next Broadway venture will probably replace Mary Poppins there, unless TLM drowns within the next year or so."

Mary Poppins is gonna run a lot longer than the next year or so. Ditto The Little Mermaid. Both shows are making Disney very healthy profits, as they're both running near capacity at the moment. Lion King, of course, is still running at (and in the case of last week, above) capacity.

BwayJunkie, the amount of misinformation in all of your posts in this thread is astounding.

Disney current thinking is that they will only have one Disney Princess at a time on Broadway. So even with Tarzan closing, Beauty still had to close because of The Little Mermaid. Based on this, they will probably not bring Alladin to Broadway unless they close TLM.

I wish I had seen the show at the Palace - or earlier on in the run. As much as I love the movie, I did not like the show at all, it just seemed tired to me - and not as grand as I had heard it had been. Perhaps if I had seen it when it was a bigger show with more energy, I would've liked it more.

Disney only came up with the "One Disney Princess on Broadway" rule just to justify them closing Beauty and the Beast for any other reason then that they were closing it to make room for Mermaid.

Disney never did anything special in terms of a leasing agreement to the Minskoff that is different then what any other producer would do. It wasn't like Disney did anything out of the norm of what is usually done when a producer is renting a theatre.
