This reminded me of something I read on Susan Egan's website about her career as a singer...
"As for voice lessons: I began studying voice when I was 15 and I am proof positive that you can LEARN TO SING. =) I was not a natural – had a very small voice, in fact. I believe singing is like any sport – you can train the muscles with a good instructor."
So there you go! Take it from a pro and keep trying! Good luck!

"if you have to take voice lessons to sing you cant sing "
SO not true. If you want to SING properly without harming your voice, you NEED them. Why do you think half the people in RENT never worked again? They went into the show with little to no training and tore their chords. I had a very nice voice before I started lessons.. I am with a new teacher for almost a year now and I am beyond happy with my vocal quality.. so, lessons really do help for the better.

Clumsy-- just being in a choir is not enough, I'd say, because you don't get invidivual attention regarding specific things you need to work on, vocal health, and warm-ups and exercises specifically for what you need, not what you and 50 other kids need. Choir is great but if you want to be a more knowledgable, healthy, and techniqued singer, definetly take voice lessons with a good teacher.
