Posted: 4/10/13 at 8:11pmThanks for that--I love reading about set designs. It does look beautiful--and way too large/overpowering just as most people said. (The only thing set wise that is meant to dominate the design is the double bed, which is kinda lost there.)

Eric, Sitting up close, the set seemed a bit large, but also gave the whole setting a surreal atmosphere that worked for me. Too much naturalism wouldn't have been as effective for this production. Especially if the original concept had a ghost meandering about.) This isn't Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? after all.
This angle makes the bed seem tiny. Could have been the lens.

Posted: 4/11/13 at 10:49amThe set was beautiful and I also liked the kind of surreal atmosphere, Playbilly. It was the way Ashford used the set that sucked, having his actors often get on that bed looking like little children playing games rather than grown ups dealing with some very serious issues, it came off as really clumsy.

"...and above all, the designer should...give the actors room to move about freely (to show their restlessness, their passion for breaking out), as if it were a set for a ballet." — Tennessee Williams' Cat stage directions
For better or worse, this set (which was more beautiful than this photo indicates) is the closest I've ever seen to Williams' directions.
