I believe he injured his back and is on medical leave until the end of May.

I miss the more pivotal roles that David (Fankhauser's character) and his brother played in the '92 movie versionj, along with his family scenes. IMHO there was too much Jack in the current NEWSIES, but I'm sure I'm in the minority on that.
