What is she doing now... will she ever return...
And for fun...
If she were to return to a show that's on right now instead originating another role, what would you love to see her in?
I would love to see her in Grey Gardens... if the audience could forgive the fact that she doesn't look like the real Edith.
I could also see her as the Chaperone (a stretch) or Mrs. Tottendale even though the latter is a waste for her.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 6:49pmI'm pretty sure she's touring. I might be wrong though. And I, too, would like to see her in Grey Gardens.

She's all wrong for the roles. I adore Bernadette as an actress, but don't see her in these roles. And yes, you can't ignore the fact that she doesn't look like the Ediths.

As others have said, she's currently touring the country doing concerts.
I saw her a few months ago and asked her afterward if she had any plans to return to Broadway. She was very nonchalant about it, shurgging and saying "One never knows for sure."
I'd love to see her in "The First Wives Club," and while I agree that she could play either Brenda or Elise, her glamour and poise would make her much more well suited for the latter.

There's a dream cast I have for the show, too.
But the names you listed wouldn't sell tickets, somethingwicked.

Debra Monk as Brenda!

Posted: 4/4/07 at 7:46pmFOAnatic, if they get Bernadette they'd have the luxury of being able to cast the other two roles with lesser known actresses. She can sell a good deal of tickets on her own (though I'm sure they'll obviously want as many names as possible.)

While Bernadette is a well known theatre name and a mildly known film actress...her name alone does not guarantee ticket sales. Look at GYPSY.
Unless the show gets stellar reviews, which I certainly hope it does. The producers will want big names and, from what I've heard, they are certainly courting big names.

LuPonatic, I doubt the poster knows anything more than the rest of us.
The "big names" he is referring to are probably the ones listed in Liz Smith's NY Post article awile ago.
"... Lambert is considering approaching Bernadette Peters, Queen Latifah, Megan Mullally, Stockard Channing and Olivia Newton-John. While Peters (Gypsy, Sunday in the Park with George) is a bona fide musical theatre legend, Latifah proved that she could sing with Broadway bravura in the film version of Chicago,
"Will and Grace"'s Mullally has starred on Broadway in Grease and How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Film star Channing appeared in a number of Broadway musicals in the '70s and '80s (The Two Gentlemen of Verona, They're Playing Our Song, The Rink) and played Rizzo in the film version of Grease, just as Newton-John played Sandy in the same film."

It's not always safe to assume.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 10:56pmI'd LOVE to see her in First Wives Club. She and Joanna Gleason together again. Amazing. Both are great for those roles too! I also heard that Bernadette might be doing that Tammy Faye Bakker musical next season.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 11:03pmHere's a non-First Wive's Club question- Why was Bernadette snubbed for Into the Woods? Joanna Gleason still would have won, as she should have, but Peters certainly wasn't bad. In fact, she was excellent? I know she didn't stay in the show for very long, but surely that shouldn't have mattered.

I'm sure glad we weren't so fixated on actresses "looking" like their real-life counterparts when they cast any of the Broadway productions of GYPSY. We would have missed out on all those legendary performances.

Partly the reason why critics were dead set against Bernadette. I think people went into the show thinking the part was too big for her and just couldn't see past it.
While, in my opinion, I think it was her best performance yet. How people said the role was too big for her I will not understand.
