Best Deals (Rush, SRO) I've Come Across#1

Posted: 6/6/07 at 8:04pm

Hey everyone. With the recent season closing out, I thought I would give some hints on the many deals and rushes that are plentiful in this town. Besides just stating the policies for each deal, I'll let you know if there is a trick attached to secure at ticket...

---110 in the Shade...You can get $26.25 rush tix when the b.o. opens, but they are in the last row of mezz. At Stuido 54, this isn't a terrible seat. But I recommend trying for the half price front row of the orchestra (you do get wet). Also, 1/2 hour before curtain, they will sell every ticket in the house for 1/2 off. Note: the $36.25 tix only go down to $26.25, so not exactly half off. Gold Star has advance tix for $56.25.

---Jersey Boys....Still pretty tough to get SRO or student rush. But I lucked out getting a rush ticket one hour before Wed. matinee. The student rush is in the first row, which is extremely partial view. There is a metal sprial staircase in your way. But this is the hottest ticket in town, so se la vie.

---Hairspray....Maybe because of the movie, the attendance has risen on weekends. But on a weekday, you're still pretty much guarenteed a ticket at the lottery. Seats are front row (very good seats). No student i.d. required, so bring the family.

---Wicked....Still that lottery. Still huge crowds. Roll the dice.

---Spelling Bee....When I saw it, which was a long time ago, it was a lottery. Now, I have heard they do general rush and SRO. Maybe someone else can fill in what it's like today.

---Grey Gardens...Good student rush policy. Usually can get it right before show time. Sometimes the seats are horribly partial view, but other times not so. If you get a choice, don't take closer on the sides, but further back and in the middle.

---Talk Radio...Easy student rush policy.

---A Moon For the Misbegotten....I recommend getting there early on a matinee day, and then trying for student rush for the evening performance. You get front row, and it is unbelievable. You may get a little wet. Definitely worth it, see it before it closes on Sunday.

---Inherit the Wind...On-stage seats or the last row of the mezzanine. Either one is okay. I saw in rear mezzanine, and it was fine. The production isn't terribly good.

---Journey's End...See it before it closes. Easy student rush.

---Deuce...This is the biggest disappointment in town. Not because the show is bad (I haven't seen it), but because they have no SRO or rush policy. And with a show that sold 59% last week, they should be begging students to come. Hopefully their policy will change soon. (Note: new discount starts in July, $47.50 seats).

---Frost/Nixon...See Misbegotten above. Very similar circumstances. You get first row, which is great for a straight play. But after Langella's win on Sunday, this show may become busy.

---The Year of Magical Thinking...Despite what their policy states (only partial view balcony for students), you can get regular old orchestra seats for $35. This is a pretty good deal, being that the people you sit amongst are paying close to $100. Try Wed. matinee for best chances.

---Spamalot...SRO isn't bad at the Shubert.

---The Pirate Queen...easy student rush

Off-Broadway mention:

Passing Strange...See this show! $25 student tix can be purchased in advance at the box office. The theater is intimate.

Hope this helps. Note: this is from individual experience, and may change depending on the day or season (for example, right now with the Tonys, audiences are starting to see many shows). Also, I am actually a student, and not some adult who can afford these tickets. I respect that each production needs to make money to stay open, but I also respect that students don't have much money.

I'm looking for info. on Radio/Golf, LoveMusik, Company, Xanadu, Les Miz, Legally Blonde, Old Acquaintance....I know the policies on SRO/Rush, I'm looking for experiences and HOPEFULLY DISCOUNT CODES (CHEAPER THE BETTER).

Company is two hours before the curtain and it's not a hard rush. I got there at about 4:30 for a 7 PM show on a Tuesday and I got row AA center orchestra.

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

And the $26.25 at 110 is NOT always last row. I say JJ ~ which is mid-mezz ~ with that rate.

Go for Legally Blonde on a two show day. There's a better chance of getting a ticket that way, especially if you aren't picky about which show you want. And the line starts really early. I went on a Sunday and got there around 9 and I was already number 20 or so in line (the box office opens at noon on Sundays).

For 110 in the Shade, it is possible to get excellent seats at half off. I saw a Saturday matinee and got fourth row center orchestra.

I've never had trouble getting Les Miz student rush tickets. They start selling them two hours before the show for $26.25, and the seats are pretty much whatever they have left in the theater. One time I got back side orchestra and another time back mezz. Both times I got the tickets after 6pm, and one time that was for a 7pm show.
