At a minimum, I saw Glynis Johns (three times), Jean Simmons, Blair Brown, Hayden Glynne (Boston), CZJ, BP, and Howes. IMO all were good, but none came close to Johns. I still think hers was the best Send in the Clowns, with BP also being truly memorable. I can picture Dench being great in the role, and have see her Clowns performance, which was among the best I have heard beyond the show, it I still stick with the beauty of Johns’ performance.
Given how mediocre the movie was, I would love to see a remake of some type. I think Renee Zellweger would be a great Desiree.

Jones had glamour, Peters had pathos, and Paterson had joie de vivre. I did think that the production as a whole was elevated and more humorous when Peters and Stritch came in."
In my Sondheim musical-fest during the pandemic, I watched an audience member-shot bootleg of the show with Peters and Stritch on YouTube. I will pause for everyone to chide me silently. I don’t doubt they had off nights, but Peters was fantastic as Desiree in my first exposure to A Little Night Music while Stritch had me laughing out loud with her sardonic comic timing.
I am sure there were better performances but I certainly enjoyed that one, crappy bootleg notwithstanding.
