I'm sure this has been discussed, but...
What musicals do you think are better in the movie version than on stage?
Chicago and Sound of Music top my list.

Yes this has been discussed before, but I'll answer anyway...
I love Sound of Music but Chicago is great too. Little Shop is up there too.

What about the original Wizard of Oz? Not sure I have seen it done on stage, though I know there is a version out there... The movie would seem tough to top on stage, though it is very close to a stage performance on film...
Is Oz not done/revived because the 1939 movie is such a definitive performance that no one would be satisfied with anything short of an exact replica? Or have the spinoffs smothered the original? Or are there legal/other reasons for its general absence?

The Wizard of Oz movie came before the stage version.
Wait - let me clarify: There was a stage version in the early 1920's, but it was totally different - developed for the vaudeville comedy team of Montgomery and Stone as the scarecrow and tinman. Oc course, it didn't have any of the songs we know and love. It was later made into a silent movie.
