Of the Phantoms I've seen--Rick Hilsabek, Davis Gaines, Tom O'Leary, Ron Bohmer, Ian Jon Bourg, Ted Keegan, and Gary Mauer, I liked Gaines and Mauer the best. --Wish I had been able to see Michael Crawford and Anthony Warlow.
To the people who mentioned James Romick, I agree 10000%! I've seen him three times now and he amazes me more each time, his voice is just so effortless and his portrayl of the character is full of such emotion! I'm also heard Michael Crawford and the current phantom sing some of the songs, and from what I can tell, James Romick is the only one who can consistently hit ALL of the notes.
"With any part you play, there is a certain amount of yourself in it. There has to be, otherwise it's just not acting. It's lying." ~ Johnny Depp
The best Phantom I've seen on stage is without a doubt Glyn Kerslake in London. He has the most expressive hands, and beautiful voice. His 'Point of no return' is one of the most seductive scenes I've seen, not had that impact with any others I've seen.
Whenever Glyn sings 'Music of the Night' in concert you could hear a pin drop!
I think the best Phantom is Alexander Goebel from the Vienna Recording. He sings the Phantom a little bit like he is crazy.
I also like Steve Barton.
But I don't think that Michael Crawford is the Phantom. I don't like his interpretation of the role.
You must die to live forever
I will show you the depths of the night
We can never go wrong together
I will take you to the end of the line
My eyes are like a shadow on you
Well, the only one I've seen was Hugh Panaro, and he was fantastic, in my opinion. But I just thought I would comment with my star connection to Brad Little! His father is the pastor at my church, and once Brad came to service because he was in town for a family reunion. And he sang in the service, and I was utterly blown away. And then I went to talk to him afterwards. Highlight of my week.
We just moved, but we used to live right next to the church that Davis Gaines goes to so I'd see him from time to time when he was in town. (Just relating another church/phantom story)
As to the best: I still stand firm. Hugh Panaro. Mind you, I have NOT seen all of them. But of the three I've seen (Jeff Keller, Gary Mauer, Hugh Panaro) he was the best and most tragic and I LOVED him. :)
I haven't seen the all, but I've seen a bunch, and for my money, nobody plays that role like Davis Gaines. I wish someone would write him his own show, as he has one of the more incredible voices I've ever heard in the theater.
I think it's pretty cool that everyone has their own favorite Phantom. For me, every actor that plays the Phantom has some unique interpretation that makes the performance wonderful; big or small. It's nice to know that everyone connects with a certain Phantom performer.
Hugh Panaro and Brad Little are my two guys still!!! I think they both have the overall package to portray Erik. :)
