Hello BroadwayWorld People...

I am beefing up my audition book...and I am in search of the perfect audition song. If you could give me your opinions that would be fantastic.

Thanks

:)

Well there really isn't the "Perfect Audition Song" because each audition cause on different things. If the show is more about singing than the acting I would chose something like "Moving to Fast" because it shows off range and is just impressive. Also if the show is more of a classic piece I might choose to do something from an older musical. If the show is pop I would pick something from Rent or Aida. "Winters on the Wing" is also a great audition. "Being Alive", "Not While I'm Around", "Something's Coming". I would consider buying the Tenor's Musical Theatre Anthology. It covers a lot of great stuff.

Yes, absolutely....I completely agree with BroadwayBound062, buy the Tenor's Musical Theatre Anthology.

When I audition, I only sing 16 bars. And, I've got a few songs that I'm comfortable singing.....either uptempo or ballad. For my uptempo, I sing "Come Boys" from "The Student Prince" and "It's Today," from "Mame." And, for my ballad, I sing "On The Street" from "My Fair Lady."

There's no perfect audition song.....it all depends on the show that you are auditioning for. If you auditioning for "Sweeney Todd," you're not going to sing something from "Hairspray," and vice versa.

I would also reccomend doing these overdone songs from athologies because as my potential competition, that choice of material can only help me.

It defintely depends on the show ... but my favorites are "Lost in the Wilderness" from "Children of Eden," and "Run Away With Me" from "The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown."

At the same time you don't want to choose something that's done to death, you also don't want to find the ultimate perfect song and have the auditioners focused on your material. Big mistake.

You want them to hear YOU more than the song. That's why for years, it was considered a no-no to sing Sondheim at an audition. Most people are over that now, but... Back in the day, the song almost always outshone the performer. Especially when the material was relatively new.

So, pick something that allows you to sell yourself above all else... not the song, show, or composer.

^ VERY true .... selling yourself is most important. Play to your own strengths.
