Best show for a first timer....

I'm taking my sister to NYC for Thanksgiving this year and I'd like to take her to see a couple of shows. We already have tickets to Chitty...what else would you suggest? I'm partial to a few that I've already seen, but would like some "unbiased" opinions of what's playing now....I haven't been in almost a year.

Either of the Disney on Broadway shows (Lion King, though it's hard too get tickets, and Beauty and the Beast.) Hairspray, Phantom, a lot.

I would suggest scalping your tickets for Chitty. re: Best show for a first timer.... lol j/k...sort of

Ummm well, it depends on a person's age and interests.
Wicked is good for everyone. Most people know/like The Wizard of Oz story.

Beauty and the Beast is very good.

Avenue Q is histerical (but that one depends on the age)

Sweeney Todd
Sweet Charity
Chicago

She's 28, so age isn't an issue....I'd LOVE to see Wicked again, but was really leaning toward Ave. Q.---she's seen tourning versions of Phantom, Beauty and loved AIDA

I think Avenue Q is a good choice. I'd also suggest Sweet Charity and Hairspray for relative "first-timers." How about RENT? That's my personal favorite!

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is hilarious and very entertaining. Hairspray is also a fun show. I love Chicago, but its not for everyone.

Do either of you like plays? I haven't seen either one of these, but I really want to see "Doubt" and "The Odd Couple."

I think that HAIRSPRAY, AVENUE Q, THE LION KING and RENT are all great and different choices for someone new to Broadway !

I have to say Avenue Q, Rent, The Producers, or The Great American Trailer Park Musical.

I would say "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels". It is a lot of fun and rides this strange line between an good old-fashioned musical comedy and a more modern piece. It isn't Chekov, but it is a lot of fun. I think it would be a great show for a first timer. Great music, great comedy, great performances, great costumes, etc. I don't feel the same about "Chitty" but that is just me.

I agree completely with DRS. Also Hairspray, Chicago (unless she's seen the film, then the show might disappoint a little), Phantom is another personal favorite.

Hairspray, for sure. It's a fun, upbeat show that's fairly straight-foreward and enjoyable for a first time theater goer. The cast is good right now too (for added enjoyment, just watch Tracy Miller for the whole show. I guarentee you'll laugh). But I may be biased, as it's one of my favorite shows (seriously, the lotto guy knows me by name).

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Avenue Q are also good bets (though I enjoyed the former more than the latter).

And, if you can swing the price, try the cancellation line for Spamalot. Sara Ramirez is NOT to be missed. I got in the cancellation line around 4 hours before the show and wound up with an 8th row center orchestra ticket, but that was on a weekday (I imagine it's much more crowded on the weekends). Orchestra seats are about $110, but it's worth every penny.

I must plug Q, but I'd also like to say Hairspray and maybe Altar Boyz or even Slut depending on how she'd take the subject matter

DRS is great anytime, but for a 20 something, first timer, and someone who dosen't get into Broadway too often, Avenue Q and Hairspray are must sees.
