Bette Midler, Sharon Stone to star in "Allergist's Wife" movie

Hot off her run in "Hello, Dolly!" on Broadway, looks like Bette Midler is returning to Hollywood to star in the movie adaptation of the Broadway hit "Tale of the Allergist's Wife". The film will be directed by Andy Fickman, and will co-star Sharon Stone.

Midler will play Marjorie Taub, 'comfortable living' Manhattan wife of an allergist, who's going through 'a later-life depression'.  Her life changes when her childhood friend Lee (Sharon Stone) comes for a pro-longed visit. 

The comedy, written by playwright Charles Busch, opened on Broadway in November, 2000 to rave reviews. The original cast had Linda Lavin as 'Marjorie' and Michele Lee as 'Lee'. Each actress, and the play itself, were nominated for Tonys the following Spring. Later in the run, Lavin was replaced by Valerie Harper, and then Rhea Pearlman before it closed. Marilu Henner replaced Michele Lee during the run of 777 performances.

A film version was first announced in 2003, as Barbra Streisand was 'attached' to the film to star as Marjorie, but that project never took off past the planning stages for a variety of reasons.

Whoops! Didn't see that...I thought I had something exciting to share! 

In any event - my vote still goes to Streisand for the role. I think she would be better than Midler, IMO.

Am I the only one who think this was a middling show that really tailed off in the second act, and is unlikely to be a successful movie?

It sounds like a nice little art house film.  I hope it’s good.

Too avant garde for me . I believe Hermann  Hesse is prominently featured.

Wake me up when it actually gets made.  These people are perhaps "attached" - there is no money for this film - they're shopping it.

Mike66..I'd say there would/could be a fair bit of re-writing before it hits the screen.
