I came across this wonderful clip of Bette singing 'Friends' at an AIDS benefit concert in 1991. A few great takeaways here:
-The second time I watched this, I couldn't help but think - this is so similar to the transformation Dolly makes during the start of 'Parade.' From sadness and borderline depression to pure joy and command. This is an emotional journey that Bette takes us on here similar to one she would take us on again nearly 30 years later.
-It's quite a sight to see Bette and Carol on stage next to each other at the end. Little did anyone know Bette would step into Carol's iconic shoes and come down that staircase in one of the greatest musical numbers ever created.
-If you didn't love Bette before this, how can you watch this and not truly appreciate what an amazing performer - and person - she is. Everything here is So. Damn. Real.
