I'm pretty sure this hasn't been posted before and I figured we could all stand to read something that doesn't involve Ms. Menzel's accident or final performance.
Anyway! I'm really excited to see this getting released again on DVD. And with some spiffy, new cover art. March 15th. Mark your calendars.

I was gonna get the old DVD for my Birthday, but now I'll wait.
THANKS, PJ!
How IS Bette Midler's Mama Rose?
Way over the top and misdirected. But still fun.

When you talked about Idina's accident on the top of the first message I thought you meant someone got the accident on DVD lol. That would be mean.
Too bad. Emile Ardolino did such a fantastic job filmiing ballet for so many years and I really liked SISTER ACT but true, that version of GYPSY was not as good as it should have been.

It's not all that great (I've never been tempted to see it more than the one time it aired). Although, it does retain the text of the show, and is better than most musicals produced for television. However, even with its cuts, dubbing, etc., I still much prefer the 1962 theatrical film. Roz and company are just fine, and you cannot improve upon the 3 stippers (which is really where the Midler production falls WAY short).

Oh, I'm sure someone got the incident on tape. There's always bootlegs being taped at that show. The Gershwin needs to crack down.
But anyway, no more Idina talk. There's already enough of that here. Love her dearly, but enough is enough.
Back on topic: I love this version just because it's so true to the Broadway productions. They used Robbins' choreography and Laurents' book.
I agree with that. Those three strippers have never been topped. I've seen the film, the TV (Bette), the Tyne on Broadway and the Bernadette on Broadway. The Bernadette revival had the best strippers since the film.
Anyone here who saw the Merman version?

I wish I could say that I did see the Merman version. The fact that I could have so easily done so and didn't, has bothered me for many years! I saw it on stage with Angela Lansbury, who I adored in the role. That entire production was really first-rate. I also saw it with Daly, which I didn't care for, but that's just a matter of taste. I had no real issue with it.
I grew up with the Lansbury recording and really like it.
My mother always loved her and imagine my thrill to have seen Angela live on stage in Sweeney - previews and during the run.
I am not that young at all Fyodor!
