you know what, sean penn has absolutely NO sense of humor. it was a ****ing joke for crying out loud. of course he knows who jude law is. chris rock made fun of himself tonight for chrissakes.to sean penn: SHUT THE F*CK UP!!!

Hey there..new here, but am a fan of broadway. Not as knowledgeable as some here (guess it is the whole distance from New York thing. ).

I am just happy to add my two cents into the whole Oscar thing.

I thought Chris Rock was ok, you could definitely tell there were people who did not appreciate the humour (I missed what Sean Penn said but did see Sean Combs face after the joke about shooting at the rap music award show).

Nothing in this world is gained by playing it safe. I may not have appreciated all of what he said, but he has the right to say it. The Oscar people knew what they were getting into.

Having read some of the rather, um heated discussions involving the Best Song category, I must say that it was a grave error to go with one singer for 3 of the 5 songs. It did smack of overexposure to me.

I live in Quebec and the rendition of the song from Les Choristes made me cringe in a most unpleasant way. Beyoncé's phonetics were less than stellar, which was sad because it is a beautiful song. I was BLOWN AWAY last year at the performance of Belleville Rendez-vous (by the original artists) and think that the Academy should have stuck with that format.

As for the other songs...I will admit I am not a fan really of Sir Andrew (I do like a couple of older musicals by him...Phantom is not one of them), and the other song (Believe, with Josh Groban) I was called away to the phone.

Part of my love of theatre and film, especially foreign theatre and film, is experiencing the talents of a wide range of performers. I think the Academy short-changed their audience last night by focussing on one performer.
