I totally agree. I purchesed it and was very still about listening to it for the longest time. A friend of mine said he saw the show in London and I must listen to the CD. So I popped it in one day and I have not STOPPED listening to it. It makes me cry and gives me chills. This is what musicals are for, to lift up the spirt and make you feel good about yourself! Billy Elliot certainly does that!

I still can't get into it. I think without the dances, the cd seems pretty pointless.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 11:17amI rather enjoyed it on first listen. Elton John, let's face it, just does not write wonderful melodies for the stage. But I think it is one of his stronger efforts and the lyrics by Lee Hall are terrific.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 2:58pmChrisLoveshows - I have to disagree. I found that Elton's Music was superior to the lyrics. Granted, the characters are simple working-class folk that wouldn't go around speaking in Sondheim-ian rhymes, but they were rather cliched and repetative. Some of the anthems I found repetative as well, but I'm sure on stage with full staging - they are quite moving. "Electricity", "Shine", "Express Yourself", "The Letter", "Grandma's song" are all terrific. Can't wait to see it when it crosses the pond (and I'm looking forward to his Lestat score as well).

He has written some lovely songs, but his stage musical scores, in my opinion, are inconsistent in quality. This one is good, however, and I'm very excited about seeing the show.
