This was easily one of my favorite nights out at the movies. It was just such a wonderful experience in every way possible. What a gorgeous show! Stephen Daldry, Lee Hall, Elton John, and Peter Darling really outdid themselves in the mounting of BILLY ELLIOT, and seeing BILLY ELLIOT LIVE! truly captured the magic of watching the stage show (which I was fortunate enough to see twice on Broadway, both of them represent incredible memories).
Ruthie Henshall as Mrs. Wilkinson was to die for. I had no idea she'd be playing Mrs. Wilkinson until a few days before I saw it, and boy did she not disappoint. It's a great role and she owned it much like Haydn Gwynne did years ago on Broadway. Her chemistry with Elliot Hannah was touching and electric. Hannah was, of course, astonishing in every way. I could go on and on.
I watched the film again a couple days ago and was just in awe of how expertly the creative team behind the musical adapted it to the stage in a way that allows the stage version to stand on its own. "Solidarity" remains one of the most genius numbers I've seen, it's a number worthy of (and I assume inspired by) Michael Bennett's best work. The "Letter" number never fails to make me cry like a baby, and "Electricity" is, in fact, electrifying. I need to own the BD right away, thanks for the heads up re the regions.
